Betty Jane Eklem, 89, Kokomo, passed away at 4:10 am, Tuesday October 2, 2018, at The Wellington Reflections Memory Care Unit.  She was born June 11, 1929, in Marietta, Ohio, the daughter of the late Alex & Helen (Bacela) Cassis.  On April 28, 1956, she married John Eklem who preceded her in death February 3, 2015.

Betty was a 1947 graduate of Kokomo High School.  She worked for Delco Electronics until starting a family.  Betty was an active member in the community and at St. Andrew Episcopal Church, helping with various activities.  She also worked for the Kokomo Perspective and Sears.  Betty was a member of the United Commercial Travelers Club #494, Eastern Star, and the Historical Society to name a few.

Yaya, which is Greek for grandma, was the pillar in her grandchildren’s lives.  She was very involved in their activities, loved spending time with them and enjoyed sending them articles about choices in life. She was very creative, and was always working on a new project.  Betty enjoyed sewing, baking, crafting, ceramics, painting, writing, and card making.

Betty is survived by her children, John Alan Eklem, Julie (John) Dale, and Jennifer (Blake) Rollins; grandchildren, Katherine (Jeremy) Moore, Philip Eklem, Domenica Eklem, Alexander Eklem, David Eklem, Dorian Dale, Brin'na Rollins, and Grace Rollins; great-grandchildren, Johnathon Moore, Mary Monica Moore, and baby Moore coming in November; three brothers, Robert (Jane) Cassis, Richard Cassis, and Ronald (Pat) Cassis, along with numerous cousins.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband.

The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation and gratitude to the staff at The Wellington Reflections Memory Care Unit.  We would also like to thank the Guardian Angel Hospice staff for all their help and care for our mom.  The love and attention of these two amazing groups over the years have made our mom's journey much easier.

A Requiem Mass will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, October 8, 2018, at St. Andrew Episcopal Church, 602 W. Superior Street, Kokomo, with Rev. Fr. Richard Lightsey officiating.  Friends are invited to visit with the family from 11-1 pm Monday at the church.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.  Shirley & Stout Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.  Messages of condolence may be left online at

There are few experiences more difficult than losing a loved one in death. As you cherish the many fond memories of Mrs. Eklem, reflect on the time when aging..., sickness..., death... and mourning will be no more! (Revelation 21:3,4; 1Corinthians 15: 26) This is what our loving God Jehovah has promised and Jesus himself guaranteed the hope of seeing our loved ones again by means of the resurrection. (John 5:28,29; Acts 24:15; Isaiah 26:19)
May God’s word bring you comfort during this difficult time and in the days ahead as we await the fulfillment of his promises.......

Dear John, Julie, Jennifer and entire Eklem clan,

I consider myself lucky for having met Betty, if only a few times. I knew immediately she was a truely gentle & strong woman. Her graciousness and love for family was palpable. Our condolences, love, prayers and hugs to all.

Christ's Peace,
Mary Ann and Dave
