Walter A. Scherb

Walter A. Scherb, 82, of Rensselaer, passed away at 4:51 pm Friday, April 18, 2025 at Franciscan Health in Lafayette, IN. He was born on March 4, 1943, in Chicago, IL, son of Lewis J. and Eleanor (Pagel) Scherb. On December 15, 1973, he married Beverly J. Wagner in Rensselaer, IN and she survives.

Walter attended Lutheran North High School, Chicago, IL and Northern Illinois University, Dekalb, IL. He was a professor in the business department at St. Joseph College for over 38 years, retiring as the department chair.  During his career he also consulted with several businesses and maintained many relationships with former students.  He enjoyed teaching people and asking questions and learning from people he found interesting.  Walter had a deep faith and attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Rensselaer.

Along with his wife, Beverly, he is survived by his children, Heather (Tom) Muzek, Lisa Scherb, and Matthew (McCinzie) Scherb; cherished grandchildren, Matthew Muzek, Michael Muzek, Rylan Muzek and Mason Muzek; and several nieces and nephews.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, 7 half siblings and 2 siblings.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am Friday, May 9th at Trinity United Methodist Church, 107 E. Angelica St. Rensselaer, IN 47978, with Pastor Sean Johnson,  Pastor Tom Hacket and Fr. Tom Conde officiating. Contributions in Walter’s memory may be made to The Salvation Army USA - Northwest Indiana, 600 81st Avenue, Merrillville, IN 46410.
