Shirley Brown Obituary

Shirley Ann Brown, 84, Kokomo, passed away at 4:52 pm on Saturday April 30, 2022, at St. Vincent Hospital, Kokomo.  The daughter of the late Burton and Martha (Hamm) King, she was born on July 29, 1937, in Danville, IL.

Shirley graduated from Danville High School and had further education in business and accounting.  While working as a secretary at General Electric in Danville, she met the love of her life, Brice, who was in General Electric’s Manufacturing Management Program.  They were married on January 7, 1961, most recently celebrating 61 years of loving marriage.

After her marriage, Shirley was a homemaker and an active member of the garden club, the hospital guild, and the women’s charitable giving club at General Electric.  Shirley was also involved with Project Concern and played an instrumental role in the Walk for Mankind, which raised funds for both the international relief organization and also for local community youth projects.  In 1978, Shirley and Brice moved to Kokomo, IN. with their three children.  Shirley worked as a floral designer at Jefferson House of Flowers, where she made many lifelong friends.  In 1990, Brice and Shirley moved to the island of St. Kitts for Brice to serve as the plant manager of Lutron Liamuiga.  Shirley served as an ambassador for Lutron in St. Kitts.  From birthday cakes to employee luncheons, from book keeping to hosting, Shirley left her mark on the lives of many at the plant and on the island.  Shirley was an active member of the horticultural society, and IWAS, an international women’s association that served the community of St. Kitts through charitable donations and deeds.  In 2002, Shirley and Brice moved to Virginia for Brice to serve as the plant manager for Lutron’s window shading operation.  In 2008, Brice and Shirley retired to Kokomo to be closer to family.

Wherever Shirley and Brice made their home, Shirley worked tirelessly to transform both the inside and outside of the home.  She created beautiful landscaping and a great day was one where she could spend the entire day working outside in the yard.  Shirley was a gracious host and enjoyed cooking for family and friends.  We will miss her homemade cookies, candy, and cinnamon and pecan rolls.  Shirley loved being “Grammy” to her grandchildren and was so proud of them.  The other love of Shirley’s life was her dog Lucy.  Lucy served as Shirley’s loyal companion and friend for the past 12 years.

Along with her husband Brice, her children, Kevin (Roberta) Brown, Alan Brown and Kathryn Brown; grandchildren, Raleigh Brown and Savannah Kate Brown; brother-in-law Bob Drews; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dean (Helen) Brown; and several nieces and nephews survive Shirley.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Betty Drews and sister and brother-in-law Mary Jane and William Ryan.

A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Friday May 6, 2022, at Stout & Son Funeral Home, 200 E. Main St., Russiaville, with family friend Jason Gerlach officiating.  Friends may visit with the family from 1 pm to 2 pm on Friday at the funeral home.  The family respectfully asks that masks be worn for both the visitation and service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be made to the Cancer Center Fund at St. Vincent Kokomo Foundation to support the inspiring work of Dr. Christopher Leagre.  Messages of condolence may be left online at www.stoutandson.com.
