Rick Helvie, 62, Rossville, passed away at 10:56 a.m. on Friday April 29, 2022, at IU Arnett Hospital in Lafayette. He was born to Nelson and Jacqueline (Zigler) Helvie in Wichita Falls, Texas on October 2, 1959. On October 21, 1978, he married his high school sweetheart, Gloria McCoy.
Rick was a 1978 graduate of Carroll High School. In high school he played multiple sports, starring in baseball and basketball. During his playing career, he won a baseball Sectional title, playing right field and pitcher.
After high school, his love affair with sports continued. For decades he coached hundreds of student-athletes, mostly in the Clinton Central school district. As a varsity coach, he won the first baseball Sectional titles in Bulldog history.
His true love was his family and the community. When he wasn’t coaching and working at Ingredion in Indianapolis, he served as a church leader at Faith Church of Christ in Burlington. He mentored countless young people while serving in this capacity.
After retirement, he went to work for his dear friends, Jon and Julie Newlin at Waddell’s IGA in Russiaville. He took his love of coaching and mentoring to the grocery store.
When he wasn’t at Waddell’s, he loved to fish, especially with his grandkids and loved to travel to Walt Disney World.
Along with his wife and parents, Rick is survived by his children, Eric (Christiana) Helvie and Jennifer (Neil) Knapp; grandchildren, Coleman Helvie, Oliver Helvie, Landon Knapp and Liam Knapp; brother, Bryan (Luann) Helvie; brothers and sisters in law, Hattie (Stanley) Moore, Chuck Skelly, Nina Trapp and Sharon (Allen) Shrock; nephew, Justin Alter; niece, Emily Helvie; and too many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews to name here.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Donald and Berniece Helvie and William “Bill” and Margaret Zigler; and mother in law, Letha McCoy.
A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Saturday, May 7, 2022, at Faith Church of Christ, 1701 S. Michigan Rd. Burlington, IN., with Nathein Perkins officiating.
