Phyllis Jean Coles, 77, Kokomo, passed away after her courageous battle with cancer at 3:02 pm on Thursday May 5, 2022, at her home. She was born to the late Fredrick E. and Lillian M. (Smith) Chaplin on June 16, 1944. On February 8, 1964, she married Karl Coles, and he survives.
Phyllis was a 1963 graduate of Kokomo High School. She was a member of Center Road Church of Christ and the “Golden Agers” church group. Most important to Phyllis was family, friends and her love for God. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren, especially on family vacations and camping trips. She was a collector of angel figurines. She loved working on art projects with various media, but especially enjoyed working with ceramics making Christmas ornaments and decorations.
Along with her husband, Karl, Phyllis is survived by her children, Christy (Steve) Stiner and Mike Coles; grandchildren, Kyle (Amy) Stiner, Wes Stiner, Trent Stiner, Alannah (Corey) Scott and Allison (Charlie) Doak; great-grandchildren, Boston Scott, Ajax Scott, Aurora Scott, Madeline Stiner, Olivia Stiner, Charlotte Stiner and another great-grandchild expected in October. Brother- and sisters-in-law, Wayne (Susie) Coles, Diana (John) Albright and Delores Wertz; nephews, Eric Wertz and Marc Wertz; and daughter-in-law, Lara Coles.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A service to celebrate and honor Phyllis’s life will be held at 12 pm on Saturday May 14, 2022, at Center Road Church of Christ, 899 W. 300 S., Kokomo, with Lynn Brust officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 10 am to 12 pm on Saturday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, donate3.cancer.org.
