Peter Matthew Schroer Obituary

Peter Matthew Schroer, 68, of Kokomo, passed away at his home on Wednesday, October 15, 2025. Born April 13, 1957, he was the son of the late Rev. Kenneth H. and Anita C. (Berning) Schroer.

Gifted with a quick mind and a teacher’s heart, Pete graduated as valedictorian of Washington High School (South Bend) in 1975. He studied history and physical education at Wabash College, graduating magna cum laude, and later earned a master’s degree from Ball State University.

For 42 years, Pete taught, primarily history, at Northwestern High School, retiring in 2022. The classroom was his calling, and the track was his second home. He coached track and cross-country for most of his career and served as assistant athletic director during his final five years. With his steady presence and quiet encouragement, he guided generations of students to value hard work, perseverance, and education.

Pete was a member of Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer for many years. He was an avid sports fan who loved cheering on the Bears, Colts, and White Sox—and he became a devoted Tigers supporter simply because his son was. In recent years, he especially loved watching his son play in the church softball league, never missing a game. A lifelong learner, Pete found joy in reading about U.S. government and history, collecting coins, and relaxing with a good science fiction novel or movie.

He is survived by his son, Kenton (Lainey) Schroer; his grandson, Leo Schroer; siblings Lisa Wesley, Nathan (Connie) Schroer, and David Schroer; sister-in-law Becky Schroer; niece Sarah Schroer; and the mother of his son, Jill Schroer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Tim Schroer; sister-in-law Cindy Schroer; and brother-in-law Mark Wesley.

A funeral service celebrating Pete’s victory over death will be held at 12 pm on Friday, October 24, 2025, at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, 705 Southway Blvd East, Kokomo with Pastor John Dreyer officiating.
