Ondis Brantley, 101, of Kokomo, passed away at 9:08 p.m. on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born July 5, 1922, in Sharps Chapel, Tennessee, to Alfred and Adeline (Berry) Brantley. On June 19, 1945, he married Mary Agnes Long, in Sharps Chapel, and she survives.
Ondis served in the Army Air Corps in the 8th Air Force as a gunner. He flew on 35 missions on B24’s and was able to take part in an Honor Flight. After his military service, he worked as a farmer. He later worked for Continental Steel and then as a group leader and oiler for over 30 years for GM/Delco Electronics, retiring in 1984. He enjoyed gardening and tending his large garden, horse racing, and hunting and fishing with family. He followed politics and occasionally wrote political opinion columns for the newspaper. He was a member of Westside Baptist and Hillside Baptist where he taught Sunday School.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Boyd (Thea) Brantley, Brenda (Jim) Papacek, Terry (Marcia) Brantley, and Pam (Steve) Hulce; grandchildren, David Brantley, Heather (Mark) Humphrey, Bethe Brantley, Leigh (Matt) Rhoda, Amanda Brantley, Amy Brantley, Brandon (Carrie) Cloud, Adam Cloud, Jason (Sara) Hulce, and Ryan Hulce; 15 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, seven siblings, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Private family services will be held. Entombment will take place in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery with military honors. Contributions may be made in memory of Ondis to Samaritans Purse or the charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Shirley & Stout Funeral Home, Kokomo.
