John "Jack" Mapes Obituary

John “Jack” Frank Mapes traveled home to be with his Heavenly Father on February 7, 2019, at St. Vincent Hospital in Kokomo.  He was born in Oolitic, IN, July 20, 1925.  Jack was the son of the late Edith (Sharr) Mapes and Fred Mapes.  He married his beloved wife, Hazel (Akins) Mapes, August 15, 1948, in Bedford, IN, and she survives.

Jack graduated from Bedford High School in 1943. He joined the United States Army Air Forces and was deployed to the China, Burma, and India Theater.  At the end of the war, Jack enrolled at Indiana University in Bloomington, where he earned a bachelor’s degree, and a Doctorate of Dental Science in 1953.  Jack was a dentist for 37 years-35 of those years in Kokomo, where he retired in 1990.

Jack was a faithful member of St. Andrew Episcopal Church since 1955.  He taught Sunday school, served on the Vestry, and taught numerous Bible study classes.  Something near and dear to Jack’s heart was serving as Lay Eucharist Minister during Sunday services.  He came into a deeper relationship with our Lord and Savior during a Faith Alive weekend at St. Andrew Church in 1977.  From that time on, he poured his heart and soul into the Faith Alive Ministries, the Cursillo Community of the Northern Indiana Diocese and Pilgrims in Progress.  He and his wife, Hazel, hosted a bi-monthly Prayer and Share group at their home for 40 years.

Jack was a member and past president of the Kokomo Country Club and an avid golfer.  He and Hazel enjoyed numerous golf trips around the country with their friends.  He was even able to play at the famed “home of golf”, St. Andrew Links in Scotland.  Little gave him greater pleasure than a round of golf played with his children and grandchildren.  Jack was a member of the Rotary Club.  He enjoyed reading-especially his Bible-and discussing politics and sports.  He was a quite a fan of the Indianpolis Colts and the Indiana University Hoosiers.

Jack is survived by his children, Cindy Mapes, Kokomo,  John (Sandy) Mapes, Greentown, and Jeff (Laurie) Mapes, Scappoose, Oregon; grandchildren, John Mapes, Greentown, Jordan Mapes, Kokomo, Christine (Nick) Schillereff, Portland, Oregon, and Nathan Mapes, Scappoose, Oregon.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Mapes; and nephew, Douglas Mapes.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at St. Vincent Hospital for the care, compassion, and professionalism they showed our father, and grandfather during the last days of his life.  We, the family, take comfort in the belief that Jack will dwell in the house of the Lord for all eternity.

A Requiem Mass will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, February 24, 2019, at St. Andrew Episcopal Church, 602 W. Superior Street, Kokomo, with Rev. Frs. Richard Lightsey, and Ted Neidlinger officiating. Military honors will be provided by the United States Army and the Greentown American Legion.   Inurnment will follow after service in the church columbarium.  Friends are invited to visit with the family from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday at the church in Parish Hall.  Memorial contributions may be made in Jack’s memory to Coordinated Assistance Ministries (CAM), Kokomo Urban Outreach, or the Kokomo Humane Society.  Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory has been entrusted with arrangements.  Messages of condolence may be left online at www.shirleyandstout.com.
