Joan Strattan Whitehouse

Joan Strattan Whitehouse, 100, formerly of Russiaville, passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at Shorepoint Hospital in Port Charlotte. She was born March 1, 1922, in West Middleton, to James Don and Rachel (Strattan) Arbuckle. On March 23, 1946, she married James O. “Bill” Whitehouse, and he preceded her in death on June 24, 2014.

Joan graduated from West Middleton High School and from Secretarial School in Kokomo. Before she was married, Joan worked as secretary in the county school superintendent’s office in Kokomo. She was an active member in the Russiaville United Methodist Church and held various offices in the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Russiaville Tourist Club for many years and, at one time, was a member of the Russiaville Historical Society. Joan was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling. She and Bill travelled extensively in the US and Canada. She and Bill also hosted a student from Brazil many years ago, Ricardo Monte Serrat, and he and his family remained close. Joan enjoyed a long, wonderful life with her loving family, many friends, and the support of her church.

Survivors include her daughter, Jacqueline Ann Weaver; sons, James Michael (Julia) Whitehouse and Peter Jon (Melanie) Whitehouse; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, James E. Arbuckle.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 9, 2022, at Stout & Son Funeral Home, 200 E. Main St., Russiaville, with Pastor James Lyon and the Rev. Father Matthew Arbuckle officiating. Burial will follow in New London Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.  Contributions may be made in Joan’s memory to the Russiaville United Methodist Church.
