Jeffrey Alan "Jeff" Schafer Obituary

Jeffrey Alan “Jeff” Schafer, 65, of Kokomo, succumbed to a 7-month battle with cancer on March 14, 2026, at Community North Hospital in Indianapolis, surrounded by his loving family. Jeff was born December 8, 1960, to Harold and Sharon (Kendall) Schafer.

Jeff was a 1979 graduate of Northwestern High School and Indiana Institute of Technology where he earned his degree in electronics engineering technology. Jeff worked for Delco/General Motors for 30+ years, retiring in 2016. In his retirement, Jeff was excited to pursue his lifelong dream and true calling and passion in caring for God’s creation and creatures as a fourth generation Schafer farmer. He was a member of Kokomo Zion Church and worked in various activities to support We Care of Kokomo. Jeff will be remembered as outgoing and fun-loving and as “my favorite uncle” to several nieces, nephews, and “bonus relatives”. He lived life to the fullest. He worked hard and played with the same enthusiasm. Jeff loved time spent at Mississinewa with friends on his boat and loved the wind in his face while seated on his Harley. But his most treasured time was the time spent on the seat of a tractor, and especially, his combine, as he harvested the fruit of his labors.

Those surviving Jeff include his brother, David Schafer; sister, Sheila (Kevin) Lamb; grandchildren, Jenner, Cali and Maverick VanNatter; and son-in-law, Clint (Britni) VanNatter. Also surviving is his stepfather, Orval Gingerich; and half-siblings, Heather Timmons, Jason Gingerich, and Shanan Ferraro, as well as several uncles, aunts and cousins.

Jeff was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, his beloved daughter Amanda Lynne and her infant son Logan, and her mother Kerri (Kennedy) Schafer Hartman.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 20, 2026, at Kokomo Zion Church, 5051 E 400 N, Kokomo with Pastor Keith Chanley officiating. Burial will follow in Kokomo Zion Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday at the church, and one hour prior to the funeral service on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jeff’s memory to We Care of Kokomo. Hasler & Stout Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
