Jedd Alan Carey Obituary

Jedd Alan Carey, 68, of Kokomo, passed away unexpectedly at 3:22 a.m. on Sunday, October 5, 2025, at IU Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana, due to complications from a hernia that led to sepsis. He had bravely faced an 18-year battle with numerous health challenges, including heart disease, a stroke, bladder and kidney cancer, and pulmonary edema. After years of fighting, his body could no longer endure the struggle.

Jedd was born on July 28, 1957, in Kokomo, son of Joseph Elias and Mary Helen (Neiheisal) Carey. On September 9, 1984, he married Sherry Stilwell in Peru, IN and she survives. During their 41 years of marriage, they were blessed with three children and five grandchildren.

Jedd was a 1975 graduate of Kokomo High School. He was a Factory worker at Chrysler for 30 years. After he retired, Jedd had also worked as a retail associate at Dunhams and an overnight security guard at Orions Safety Products. When he was young, he worked as a paperboy for the Kokomo Tribune.

Jedd was a gentle soul, known for his wisdom, rock n’ roll spirit, and iconic laugh. No matter the circumstance, Jedd could always find something to smile about—and he never missed a chance to make others laugh, too. He loved spending time with his family including his grandkids who all called him “Pa”. You could usually find him playing the guitar, sitting on the porch, listening to baseball games on the radio, or hanging out around the campfire. He also enjoyed going fishing, camping, and hiking, as well as playing Scrabble. Sometimes, he dabbled in making art with copper metalwork and mosaic.

His granddaughter, Layla, once wrote a card for him that said “I’m praying for you no matter where you are. I love you no matter where you are. You’re the best Pa a child could ever have in their life, even when you’re not here with me, even when you’re in the hospital.”

Along with his wife, Sherry, he is survived by his mother Mary “Babe” Carey; children, Sarah (Matt) Hodgin, Zach Carey, and Kristen (Brian) Rodrey; grandchildren, Layla Hodgin, Cole Hodgin, Dane Hodgin, Jocelyn Hodgin, and Cosette Rodrey; siblings, Stacy (Randy) Dudeck, Greg (Michelle) Carey, and Susan (Gary) King; and many nieces and nephews.

Jedd was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Carey.
