Janet Hagmann Ungerer

Janet Hagmann Ungerer, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and great-grandmother, passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord on the morning of Monday, June 30, 2025. She was 84 years old.

Janet was born on November 10, 1940, in Irvington, New Jersey, the daughter of George and Gladys (Scherer) Hagmann. On August 25, 1962, she married the love of her life, Walter J. Ungerer, Sr. Together, they built a life of deep faith, devoted service, and unconditional love. In 1978, Janet and Walter Sr. moved to Kokomo, IN, where they were welcomed and loved by many in the community.

She is survived by her children: Cheryl of Kokomo; Walter of Atlanta, GA; and Brian (Karen) of Kokomo. She was the proud and loving grandmother of eight cherished grandchildren—Alex (Calvin), Briel (Domonic), Benjamin (Caitlin), Jacob, Nicholas, Peter (Isabella), Reis, and Molly—and great-grandmother to Foster, Nora, Milo, and Brix. Janet was preceded in death by her husband Walter Sr., her parents, her sisters Doris and Elaine, and her brother George “Buster”.

Janet was the embodiment of Christian love and service. To know her was to know joy, warmth, and the kind of love that made you feel seen, cherished, and cared for. She lived each day with purpose, unwavering faith, and a radiant spirit that uplifted everyone around her. She always found the silver lining, always had a smile to give, and always placed others before herself.

A devoted wife, Janet faithfully supported Walter Sr. in his ministry and academic pursuits, serving as his steadfast partner in all things—from assisting with church duties and correspondence to helping write and edit his book, Habakkuk: The Man with Honest Answers as well as his Doctorate dissertation.

Her dedication and energy were boundless, and her love for Walter Sr. was inspiring to all who witnessed it. She also deeply enjoyed her community working in the engineering group at Delco Electronics and managing the office of Dr. Kerr.

Janet’s role as “Grandma” was one she embraced wholeheartedly. Her grandchildren adored her—and so did all their friends, many of whom also called her “Grandma.” Whether she was on the sideline cheering during countless sporting events, going sledding, playing board games, or simply offering her unwavering support and affection, she poured her heart into every moment. Her joy was found in being present with her family, creating memories that will be treasured for generations.

Janet and Walter Sr. shared a love of travel, sponsoring tour groups together and collecting souvenirs and stories along the way. Among their adventures, one of their favorite destinations was their cozy retreat in Hawley, Pennsylvania. There, they enjoyed peaceful days along the Lackawaxen River, local diners with friends, fishing, and impromptu visits with their East coast family members. It was their sacred place of rest, peace, and connection.

In recent years, Janet expressed a growing readiness to be reunited with her beloved Walter Sr. and to meet her Savior. While her family grieves the profound loss of her physical presence, the radiant smile, the hand to hold, the quiet comfort of watching Hallmark movies by her side, they take comfort in knowing she is finally at peace in her eternal home.

Her life was a testament to faith, kindness, and love in its purest form. Janet’s legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Her family finds peace in imagining the Lord greeting her with open arms and the words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

Janet, thank you for the life you lived, the love you gave, and the joy you spread. We will carry your light with us always.

Janet’s Celebration of Life will be hosted by First Evangelical Church, 2000 W Jefferson St, Kokomo, IN with an open house style gathering after. Cremation has been entrusted to Georgia Cremation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Janet’s memory to First Evangelical Church.
