Jan "Scotty" Scott Obituary

Jan “Scotty” Hulet Scott, 77, of Kokomo, IN, passed away peacefully at 1:57 pm Thursday January 13, 2022, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Kokomo with his wife, Alysha, and his son, Christopher, at his side.

He was born May 17, 1944, in Kokomo, he was the son of Max L. Scott Sr. (deceased January 29, 2004) and Evelyn I. (Hulet) Scott (deceased November 18, 2001). Jan attended Howard Elementary School and Kokomo High School. He proudly served in the United States Air Force until he was Honorably Discharged.

In 1970, Jan married Sarah (Werbe) Scott. Of this union, they had one son, Christopher Russell Scott. Jan married Alysha Wiles on December 31, 2006, and she survives. Jan was an active voice in the North Side Little League Baseball, following his son through the minor and major league programs. He served as League President, was a Minor League Coach, rotated in the concession stands, and worked diligently to obtain team sponsorships.

Just like his father, Jan was a firefighter with the City of Kokomo for 25 years until his retirement in 1992. He was known as “Sugar Bear” by fellow firefighters and old-timers. Jan worked servicing, selling, and delivering fire extinguishers within the Firefighters local 396. He worked at Firestone Tire (uptown Kokomo). He worked part-time at Miller Body Shop with owner Bill Miller, his friend and fellow fireman. Jan enjoyed bodywork, hand sanding, and painting cars. He was very skilled at it, but he said he was never as good as his friend Bill was. He was the Resident Manager of Bon Air Mobile Home Park for over 20 years. Jan enjoyed time spent with his dad wood-working and creating perpetual calendars, rocking horses, hope chests. All projects were made from real wood of all different kinds.

He was a car enthusiast who loved “street rods” and owned several over the years. His passion was his ’39 Pontiac street rod named: The Lemon Drop Kid. Every weekend was spent traveling to car shows, rod runs, and “drivin’ his rod in and not loaded up on a trailer!” Jan was a member of the Frog Dog Streeters, Shifters, and Rusty Nuts Car Clubs. For many years, Jan hosted an annual car show at Doc’s Drive In Restaurant in Kokomo with the great help of his many street rod buddies. He worked passing out flyers, securing door prizes, ordering dash plaques, filling entrant goodie bags, and parking cars on Doc’s lot—he truly loved it with a passion!

Jan was a good man, a great provider, and a very hard worker. He loudly voiced his beliefs, happily shared them with others, and you always knew where you stood with him.

He leaves to mourn his loss and treasure his memories, his loving wife of 18 years, Alysha; one son, Christopher Russell Scott, Kokomo; stepchildren, Alyse (Nick) Osborne, Joseph Trivette, Jonathan Walters; grandchildren, Anika, Emmie, Maddie; special grandson, Bradly Wohlford; sister, Cheryl R. Scott (Bart) Fink, Converse, brother, Max L. (Mary) Scott Jr., Belleview, FL; nephews, Max (Ashlie) Scott II, Bartley Fink, Jeremy Fink, Scott Croxford; nieces, Melissa Croxford, and Sheila Scott.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Carman Kay Scott Croxford; his forever friend and brother firefighter, Ronald “Ronnie” DeBusk; and Air Force “paadna”, Ron Nickels.
