Obituary

Henry “Hank” Percell Buchholz, 86, Kokomo, passed away at 11:08 a.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2016, at Reflections Memory Care.  He was born July 9, 1929, in Huntington, to Fred H. and Effie (Percell) Buchholz.  On June 24, 1953, he married June M. (Litwiller) Buchholz, in Kitchener, Ontario, and she survives. 

He graduated from Huntington Township High School in 1947, earned his Bachelor of Science from Huntington College in 1953, and his Master of Science from the University of Wisconsin in 1962.  He served in the United States Navy as a communications officer aboard the USS Taylor DDE 468 and also served in the Naval Reserves for several years prior to and following his active duty service.  He taught high school physics at Kokomo High School for 28 years where he coached freshman football and varsity swimming and wrestling.  He also had taught at Fulton and Rochester High Schools for six years.  He was very active in the Kokomo Civic Theater and volunteered for the American Red Cross driving blood from hospitals to Fort Wayne and other Indiana hospitals.  He also was a dedicated blood donor and had donated over ten gallons of blood.  He was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion and a member of South Side Christian Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir, and was an Elder Emeritus.

In addition to his wife, June M. Buchholz, he is survived by his sons, David F. (Julie) Buchholz, Robert H. (LuAnn) Buchholz, and James R. (Deanna) Buchholz; daughters, Laura M. (Robert Smith) Buchholz, and Mary E. (Jon) Buchholz-Bearden; grandchildren, Brock Buchholz, Lucas Buchholz, Johanna Goode, Tyler Buchholz, Caroline Buchholz, Christian Buchholz, Andrew Buchholz, Angela Buchholz, Mackenzie Bearden, T.J. Buchholz, Melissa Cormican, and Matt Buchholz; granddaughter at heart, Emma Conyers; and great-grandchildren, Season Buchholz, Brynn Buchholz, Chloe Buchholz, Lane Buchholz, Sophie Buchholz, Declan Buchholz, Remy Buchholz, and Nathan Goode.

He was preceded in death by his parents; twin grandsons, Ryan and Drew Buchholz; sister, Elizabeth Quakenbush; niece, Jeannette Quakenbush; and nephew, Michael Quakenbush.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at South Side Christian Church, 201 E. Markland Ave., Kokomo, IN 46901, with Pastor Becky Sundquist officiating.  Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery with military rites.  Friends are invited to visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the church.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to South Side Christian Church.  Shirley and Stout Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.  Messages of condolence may be left online at www.shirleyandstout.com.
