George Robert “Bob” Wagner, 101, passed away peacefully at home in his beloved hometown of Kokomo, September 17, 2019. He was born in Kokomo in 1918 to John H. and Grace (Long) Wagner.
At the young age of 17, Bob was one of the first in the city to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. In 1936, he graduated from Kokomo High School and then attended Indiana Central College. He joined the Naval officers training program and proudly served his country as Lt. Commander in the United States Navy during WWII. After the war, he earned his teaching degree from Butler University and taught for several years at Roosevelt School and later at Lafayette Park. Bob became principal at Elwood Haynes and Lafayette Park Schools. He was married to Janet (Pell) from 1948-1975, who preceded him in death.
Bob was a proud member of Kiwanis, the Fraternity of Freemasons, the Scottish Rite, Retired Teachers Association, the American Legion, and a faithful member of First Christian Church in Kokomo. He was an avid traveler, visiting all 50 states, as well as multiple countries in Europe and Asia. After his retirement, you could frequently find Bob enjoying a round of golf or fishing for walleye in Canada.
Bob is survived by his five daughters, Ann (Steve) Mount, Carol (Robert) Rayjones, Susan (Bob) Coghill, Bette (Harold) Brown, and Barbra (Jerry) Koenig; Bob was also blessed with 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, September 23, 2019 at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 West Lincoln Road, beginning with Masonic Rites. Burial will follow in Crown Point Cemetery with Military Rites provided by the United States Navy and the Kokomo VFW Military Rites Team.
