Garnett Carter, Jr. Obituary

 Garnett George Carter Jr., 76, Goodlettsville, TN., passed away at 3:15 pm on Sunday May 22, 2022, at Tristar Skyline Medical Center in TN.  He was born in Wallins Creek, KY., on May 12, 1946, to the late Garnett George Sr. and Effie Qumile (Burgan) Carter. On September 2, 1967, in Kokomo, IN., he married Peggy Ann Barnes and she survives.  Garnett and Peggy would have been married 55 years this September.

Garnett was a 1965 graduate of Kokomo High School.  He served in the United States Army N G from 1966 to 1971. He worked for General Motors as a Maintenance Supervisor, retiring October of 1995.  After retirement he started Wax On - Wax Off Janitorial Services and operated it for 10 years.  Garnett was a founding member of the traveling gospel group The Gospel Singing Messengers, who were active from 1971 to 1996. They released 5 albums together spreading the Good News through song.  Garnett also volunteered with his local church families at Gospel Light Mission, and Morning Star Church. Garnett loved local music and pawn stores, always looking for a deal, and to make friends and tell stories, even working at one for a short time.  Garnett was a vintage guitar collector.

Garnett is survived by his wife, Peggy Ann of Goodlettsville, TN.; children, Jeremy Paul (Mandy Myers) Carter of Spring Hill TN, and Amanda Michelle (Zack Gibson) Graham of Mebane, NC.; siblings, Janice Fay (Carter) Horn of Kokomo, IN. and Charles Jerome Carter of Okeechobee FL.; grandchildren, Corey (Olivia) Graham, Haley (Nic Poole) Graham, Sarah Carter and Zoe Carter; first great grandchild, Mercy Page Graham, due in June of 2022; nieces and nephews, Ruth Carter, Vicki Clagg, Rebecca Chandler, Paula Boyle, Bobby Jones, Rhonda Cockrell, Cindy Jones, Glenda Casteel, Brian Jones, Kathy Titus, Jon Jones, Tim Carter and Michelle Hochstedler; and sister in law, Bonnie (King) Carter of Kokomo, IN.

He was preceded in death by his parents Effie and Garnett Sr.; brothers, Ron Carter and Tracy Carter; daughter, Carrie Ann Carter; nephew, Allen Carter.

A funeral service will be held at 12 pm on Tuesday May 31, 2022, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home, 1315 W. Lincoln Rd, Kokomo, IN., with Pastor Jeff Evans officiating.  Burial will follow in Mound Cemetery.  Friends may visit with the family from 10 am to 12 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home. A memorial service will also be held at 1:30 pm Thursday May 26, 2022, at the Church at Grace Park, in White House, TN. Memorial contributions may be made to LMI Ministries, PO Box 311, Greentown, IN. 46936, an organization that supports missionaries in Sri Lanka.
