Evelyn Joan Tew

Evelyn Joan Tew, 90, went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 15, 2026, at her home. She was born on August 18, 1935, to Scott and Marie (Foreman) Alexander in Kokomo. On October 9, 1953, she married Paul Sommers, who preceded her in death on October 15, 1977. On July 20, 1979, Joan married Amon “Dick” Tew, who preceded her in death on May 25, 2016.

She graduated from Eastern High School in 1953. After high school, she worked at Lantz’s Grocery, and Continental Steel office.

She was a member of Mt. Zion Free Methodist Church. She loved sewing, crocheting, and doing children’s ministries, especially the continued stories. For 25 years, she helped lead nursing home services. For several years she was a stay at home mom. June 1978, she was employed as a secretary and bookkeeper for Greentown Equipment, retiring in January 2005.

Joan is survived by her daughter, Pam (Jeff) Maish; sons, Dale Sommers M.D., Kevin (Patti) Sommers, Brian (Lisa) Sommers, and Jeffrey (Tammy) Tew; grandchildren, Dan Sommers, Doug (Ashley) Sommers, Nichole Renae Sommers, Stephanie (Matt) Fertucci, Craig (Melissa) Sommers, Chris Maish, Brad Maish, Adam (Kayla) Maish and Brock (Lindsay) Tew; 12 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her husbands, Paul Sommers and Amon “Dick” Tew; parents, Scott and Marie Alexander; son, Richard (Denise) Tew; brothers, Elvin Alexander, Herbert Alexander, Wayne Alexander, John Alexander; sister-in-law, Sue Reynolds, Ena Miller, and Frances Alexander; nephew, Richard Alexander; grandson, Jacob Tew; and granddaughter, Lyndsey Tew.

A funeral service celebrating Joan’s life will be held at 12 pm, Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home, 1315 W. Lincoln Rd, Kokomo, IN, with Pastor Jackson Moore officiating.
