Dora Alexander Obituary

Dora J. (Bowers) Alexander, 85, went peacefully to her eternal home at 9:55 pm Monday, September 30, 2019.  She was born October 23, 1933, in Luttrell, Tennessee, the daughter of the late Thomas Roy & Monnie H. (Tharp) Bowers.

Dora was a graduate of Kokomo High School.  She was the first female pilot in Howard County, soloing June 1968. Her first flight was with her twin Cora. She spent winters snowmobiling and winters in Bradenton, FL. Dora was an accomplished seamstress, (loved making costumes for her kids).  She owned her own ceramic shop, enjoyed making stained glass, and oil painting. She traveled to all 50 states and several countries over the years.   She retired from General Motors in April 1987 after 32 years of service as a Trainer. Most knew her as Dora Hightower. After retirement she studied for her LPN license and worked for Dad’s Deli. She was a member of Elks, FOP, Moose Lodge, & the Eagles.

Dora was a very devout Christian, who loved cooking for her family.  There was nothing more precious to her than the love for her children, parents, and grandchildren.  She loved entertaining for all holiday events. Dora loved her dogs, Benji, Heidi and Caesar.

Dora is survived by her children, Ronald (Mary) Alexander, and Pamela (Dirk) Hankins; grandchildren, Kelly (Jason) Mavrick, April (Robert) Cox, and Melissa Jones; great-grandchildren, Lucy, Molly and Charlie Mavrick, Trae, Dustin and Summer Herglund, Johnathan and Ronnie Warren; siblings, Virgie Huskins, and identical twin, Cora DuPouy, along with many nieces and nephews & many special friends who brought her much comfort & joy throughout her illness. Special friends Jack Milner & Wilma Dennis.

Dora was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Drama Dukes, Donna Mohler, Roy, Kenneth and Gary Bowers. Also Laurel D Alexander & Paul Hightower.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm Friday, October 4, 2019, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo, with Chuck McCoskey and son-in-law, Dirk Hankins officiating.  Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Mausoleum.  Friends are invited to visit with the family from Noon until time of service on Friday at the funeral home.  Messages of condolence may be left online at www.shirleyandstout.com.
