Donna Sipes Obituary

Donna J. Sipes, 79, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Monday, January 29, 2024, at Community Howard Hospital, Kokomo.  Born April 26, 1944, in Indianapolis, Indiana, she was the daughter of Donald and Norma (Durflinger) Kimberlin.  She is survived by her loving husband, Gary L. Sipes, whom she married on September 1, 1963.

Donna grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, and attended Pike High School.  She and her husband Gary met on a double date in high school, and they have remained by one another’s side ever since. She received her Master’s Degree at Indiana University-Kokomo and taught second grade at Western Primary for 30 years.  Upon her retirement, Donna served as a volunteer at Community Howard Hospital for many years, and she thoroughly enjoyed her time serving others. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and long-standing member of First Baptist Church in Russiaville, she was especially devoted to the Holy Bible, and she read scripture daily.  Donna and Gary enjoyed traveling together over the years, particularly to see railroads, tour Civil War battlefields, spend quality time in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and the Smoky Mountains, see Hawaii, Alaska, and Ireland, and enjoy many more destinations together.  She was an avid sports fan and loved watching Purdue basketball and Colts football.

She is survived by her husband, Gary; son, Michael and (Melissa) Sipes and their children, Maggie and (Ande) Shipman, Katie and (Mark) Smith, Emma Oesterle, and Fischer Oesterle; son, Scott and (Lisa) Sipes and their children, Molly Sipes, Adam Sipes, and Matthew Sipes; sister, Carolyn Schwierk of New Jersey; sister-in-law, Pat Sipes; nieces Barbara and (Ronnie) Runyon, and Kathy and (Jeremy) Polk, Kim and (Dan) Nolan, Lauren and (Brian) Christian; grandnephews and nieces Jesse Polk, Jake Polk, Katie Runyon, Peyton Nolan, Brayden Nolan, Madalyn Nolan, Owen Christian, and Madison Christian; great-grandchildren Lilah and Norah Shipman and Luke and Willa Smith; and many dear family members and lifelong friends whom she cherished.   The family is particularly thankful for the love and guidance from family members Ron and Paula Richey and Marydean Forman during Donna’s battle with cancer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Norma Kimberlin; her stepfather, Carl Sims; her father and mother-in-law, Ralph and Virginia Sipes; and her brother-in-law, Jim Sipes.
