Donald Wayne Leffert Jr., 69, Kokomo, passed away at 2:17 pm Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Kokomo. He was born February 9, 1952 in Toledo, Ohio, the son of the late Donald Wayne Sr. and Jeannine Hayes.
Don was a 1970 graduate of Western High School. He graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy on December 16, 1977. Don retired from the Howard County Sherriff’s Department after 28 years of service. He was named Officer of the Year in 1992. On June 16, 1996, the Sherriff’s Department promoted him to Sargeant. In addition to being a deputy, he was a field training officer and a member of the SWAT team. Don was a member of the NRA and retired Police and Firefighters Association of Indiana. He enjoyed genealogy research, hiking with his dog Sarge, and was an avid New York Yankees fan. Above all, Don enjoyed spending time with his family.
Don is survived by his 2 daughters, Monica Lynn (James Jr.) Skinner, and Miranda Christine (John) Hitchcock; grandchildren, Ellie and Savannah Hitchcock, and Alyssa and Braylee Skinner.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; and grandparents, John (Nina) Leffert, and Kenneth (Helen) Hayes.
A funeral service will be held at 10 am Friday, January 28, 2022, at Stout & Son Funeral Home, 200 E. Main St., Russiaville, with Justin Markley officiating. Burial will follow in Kokomo Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 4 pm to 7 pm Thursday, January 27, 2022, at the funeral home.
