Carlis McCauley, 92, Kokomo, passed away at 5:00 pm Saturday, September 9, 2023, at Waterford Place Health Campus in Kokomo. She was born January 5, 1931, in Howard County the daughter of the late Norris & Florence (Barker) VerBryck. On July 24, 1949, she married her high school sweetheart, James H. McCauley.
Carlis was a 1949 graduate of Galveston High School, and together with Jim they enjoyed more than 70 years of family, friends and adventures until his passing on December 23, 2019. During her working years she was a secretary, starting out at the Howard County Schools Superintendent’s Office from 1950-1960, followed by positions at the Jeffersonville Schools Superintendent’s Office in 1964 and Clark County Schools Superintendent’s Office from 1965-1966 as they moved while Jim worked on his degree in Business Education. Eventually, they settled in Logansport in 1967 and she worked as a secretary for Logansport Community Schools until June 1981. After she retired from the Logansport school system, she and Jim founded Homestead Realty and she served as the Office Manager until they eventually fully retired together in 1990.
Throughout their long marriage, Carlis and Jim loved traveling extensively, especially throughout the United States and Europe and spent many winters in Texas during retirement. Along with traveling, Carlis also enjoyed cooking and especially spending time with her large extended family, as well as playing cards and dominos with family and friends. She was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church in Kokomo.
Carlis is survived by her sisters-in-law Ellen VerBryck, Becky VerBryck, Dorothy Catt & Diana McCauley; twenty-four nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and nephews, all of whom were very dear to her.
Carlis was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings Howard VerBryck, Harold VerBryck, Margaret (John) Miller and Mary (Marion) Longfellow as well as nephews Greg VerBryck, Jeff VerBryck and Bob Miller and nieces Marla Miller and Carla Longfellow.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday, September 14, 2023, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo, with Pastor Joe Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Galveston Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 12-1 pm Thursday at the funeral home.
