Ruth Irene Castle, 95, Indianapolis, formerly of Kokomo, passed away at 6:40 am Sunday, November 12, 2017.  She was born April 25, 1922, in Delaware County, the daughter of the late Ernest Robert & Ora May (Jones) White.  On October 11, 1952, in Muncie, she married Mason Castle, who preceded her in death in July of 1999.

Ruth was a 1939 graduate of Royerton High School.  She was a graduate of Indiana Business College and a 1972 graduate of the Kokomo School of Practical Nursing.  Ruth also studied evangelistic music at Indiana Wesleyan University.  She had worked for the Nickle Plate Railroad for the superintendent’s office for 12 years. She also worked at St. Joseph Hospital for 12 years.

Ruth was an accomplished musician.  She wrote many songs and played the piano and organ in numerous churches in the Muncie and Kokomo areas.  She also taught private piano lessons in her home to many students through the years.

Ruth’s sense of humor will be remembered and missed by many.  There will be an empty place at the Kum-join-us Sunday school class at First Church of the Nazarene in Kokomo where she was a member for many years. Ruth was quick to add her impromptu comments and loved to make people laugh.  She was always dressed to the “nines”, complete with her pearls and a flower in her hair.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, René (Chip) Gagnier, Indianapolis; grandchildren, Alexandra Gagnier, New York City, NY, and Max Gagnier, Atlanta, GA; nieces, Martha Dunning, Lawrenceburg, Marilyn (Norman) Hotmire, Muncie, and Brenda (Tom) Gourley, Muncie; nephews, Philip (Vera) White, and Stephen (Sherry) White; sisters-in-law, Dortha Castle, Wabash, Sharon Castle, Wabash, and Alice Waterman, Maine; along with numerous friends and acquaintances; and adopted family, Dr. Don & Deborah Zent, and their son, Brad.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Mason Castle, brother & sister-in-law, Clayton & Anna Mae White, and sister and brother-in-law, Inez & Howard Yates.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, November 16, 2017, at First Church of the Nazarene, 2734 S. Washington Street, Kokomo, with Pastor David Leeder officiating.  Private family burial will be held in Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery.  Friends are invited to visit with the family from 10-11 am on Thursday at the church.  Memorial contributions may be made in Ruth’s memory to the First Church of the Nazarene. Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.   Messages of condolence may be left online at

Rene, I will truly miss your mom. She was very special to me. Your family and my family go way back. It is amazing that I was singing one of her songs just last week..."Forevermore".
