Sylvia (Lyons) Dyer

Sylvia Dyer, 85, Kokomo, passed away at 5:10 am Sunday, June 10, 2018, at Kokomo Healthcare Center.  She was born August 26, 1932, in Camden, Arkansas.  She was the daughter of the late Irvin Keller Lyons & Lela Pearl (Smith) Lyons.  On October 1, 1955, she married Albert Dyer who preceded her in death on July 11, 1991.

Sylvia was a graduate of Camden High School and had attended Phillips University in Oklahoma.  She was a member of NAMI, and Southside Christian Church where she served as elder, and past president of the women’s group, CWF. She would correspond with the missionaries with hand written letters of prayers and encouragement.   Sylvia was an active volunteer for the American Red Cross, Samaritans Caregivers, Community Howard Regional Health, and was a Girl Scout leader when her daughters were younger.  Sylvia loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and her friends.  She enjoyed crossword puzzles, gameshows on TV, playing cards, serving her church and family. 

Sylvia is survived by her daughters, Donna Sue (Dale) Roberts, Oxford, IN, Diana Lynn (Keith) Birkey, Kokomo, Delores Jane (Walter) Cory, Kokomo, and Karla Denise (James) Buchanan, Kokomo; grandchildren, Daniel Roberts, Devin Roberts, Derrick Roberts, Brian Birkey, Elizabeth (Marcus) Masiarak, Brent (Monica) Birkey, Jordan (Lauren) Cory, Ben Cory, Lance Cory, Ian Buchanan, Samanatha Buchanan, Kayla Ferguson, Vera LaFleur, Cassie Buchanan, and Heather Buchanan, along with 17 great-grandchildren; siblings, Olivia Condon, St. Petersburg, FL, and Gilbert Lyons, Colorado.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; grandson, Wesley Cory; and brother, Irvin Keller Lyons, Jr. 

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm Thursday, June 14, 2018, at Southside Christian Church, 201 East Markland Ave., Kokomo, with Dr. Peggy Hickman officiating.  Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery.  Friends are invited to visit with the family from 4-8 pm Wednesday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 West Lincoln Road, Kokomo, and one hour prior to service on Thursday at the church.  Memorial contributions may be made in Sylvia's memory to Southside Christian Church.  Messages of condolence may be left online at www.shirleyandstout.com.
