Robert G. “Bob” Berry, 90, Kokomo, passed away at 8:37 a.m. on Friday, September 13, 2019, at North Woods Village in Kokomo. He was born April 30, 1929, in Kokomo, the only child of Ernest M. and Pauline (Stahl) Berry.
Bob lived his entire childhood in Kokomo, attended the Kokomo School system and worked his entire career at Delco Radio. He joined the United States Air Force in 1951 and was stationed at White Sands Missile Range, Alamogordo, New Mexico, (Holoman Air Force Base) as a control tower operator. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1955. After his military service, he returned to Kokomo and continued working at Delco until his retirement in 1987.
On August 18, 1973, he was married to Sue A. Swoverland, at Oakland Christian Church, by the Rev. Harry Melton. They were blessed with one daughter, Erica L. Berry, and three grandchildren, Brendan Berry, Devin Berry and Leah Mitchell. Bob and Sue raised Brendan and Devin most of their lives, so they are more like sons than grandsons and provided much joy and love in their winter years of life.
Bob was a charter member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church where he served in various capacities including vice president, usher, communion server, janitor and office assistant. After his retirement, Bob donated his time cleaning his church for many years.
Next to his church and his family, his greatest love was motorcycling. He owned Harley Davidsons for most of his life. He and his wife took many long weekend trips to every state east of the Mississippi, including trips to the Smoky, Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountains. They also took a two-week motorcycle trip with their daughter up through Detroit, across the eastern half of Canada and back to the U.S. on a ferry to Bar Harbor, Maine.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2019, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 121 Santa Fe Blvd., Kokomo, with Pastor John Kolb officiating. Burial will follow in Albright Cemetery with military honors provided by the United State Air Force and the Kokomo VFW Military Rites Team. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bob’s memory to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or the Alzheimer’s Association. Messages of condolence may be left online at www.stoutandson.com.
