Richard Kent Shanks, 71, Kokomo, passed away at 4:30 pm Saturday, December 1, 2018, at his home. He was born November 6, 1947, in Kokomo, the son of George William & Martha Jane (Sanders) Shanks.
Richard served with the United States Army from 1965-1969 where he earned the rank of SP4. While serving he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Bronze Star Medal. He retired from Chrysler in 2008 after 38 years of service. Richard was a member of the Kokomo VFW, the American Legion in Galveston, Eagles, F.O.P., and Local #685. He enjoyed fishing and making fishing lures, along with traveling to Nashville.
Richard is survived by his mother, Martha Shanks; children, David (Michelle) Shanks, and Christina Barney (Michael West); grandchildren, Kenneth Shanks, Nathanial (Brianna) Shanks, Cristian Shanks, Trayjen Barney, and Kabriella Lockert; 4 great-grandchildren; siblings, Vickie (Don) Enix, and Steve Shanks; nieces and nephews, Michelle (Ray) Bard, Tracy Shanks, Michael Shanks, Donnie Enix, Jay Shanks, Tiffany Shanks, and Nick Shanks.
Richard was preceded in death by his father, George William Shanks; and brother, Michael Shanks.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 pm Friday, December 7, 2018, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 West Lincoln Road, Kokomo. Military honors will be provided by the United States Army and the Greentown American Legion Post #317. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 4-6 pm Friday at the funeral home.
