Michael Spence Obituary

Michael E. “Mike” Spence, 73, Kokomo, passed away at 2:20 p.m. on Thursday, September 12, 2019, at Community North Hospital, in Indianapolis, with his wife by his side. He was born July 8, 1946, in Marion, to Nolan E. and Norma Spence.  On November 20, 1982, he married the love of his life, Margaret “Peggy”, and she survives.

Mike graduated from Marion High School in 1964 and went on to proudly serve in the Army National Guard.  He retired from Chrysler after 34 years of service, and after his retirement, enjoyed golfing, motorcycling, traveling and poker.

For the past 20 years, he and Peggy had been Florida snowbirds, living in both Florida and Indiana.  They had a great time operating a hotdog concession boat on Ft. Myers Beach, Florida, for nine years.  Mike wasn’t ready to sit on the couch, so he travelled the country delivering RV’s to dealers.

Mike … a wonderful husband, dad, grandpa, son, friend and many things to the many people who loved him.  He always said he didn’t have a bucket list because he did it all as he went along.  He was a lifetime member and past commander of Greentown American Legion Post 317 and a member of Greentown Masonic Lodge 341, the Scottish Rite and the Shriners.

In addition to his wife, Peggy Spence, he is survived by his father, Nolan; children, Angela (David) McKinney, Tracy (Angie) Spence, Zach Spence and Craig (Beth) Spence; step-children, Michelle Brewer, Jason (Shannon) Butts and Greg (Angie) Butts; grandchildren, Aaron Brewer, Emily Turley, Amanda McKinney, Cali DeWitt, Kelsey Spence, Katie Spence, Mallory Butts, Grayson Butts, Madison Butts, Riley Butts, Reagan Butts, Reese Butts, Brandon Spence and Shelby Spence; and nine great-grandchildren.  He had four nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Norma; sister, Linda Moore; and brother-in-law, Steven Moore.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, September 16, 2019, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home, 1315 W. Lincoln Rd., Kokomo, with Chaplain Rob Mifflin officiating.  Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Army and the Greentown American Legion.  Friends are invited to visit with the family from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday and from Noon to 1 p.m. on Monday all at the funeral home.  A Masonic service will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mike’s memory to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.  Messages of condolence may be left online at www.shirleyandstout.com.
