Karl Dean Gilbert, 61, Greentown, passed away at 1:51 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, 2015, at his residence. He was born May 16, 1954, in Tipton to Max H. and Grace Evelyn Gilbert.
He had taught at Indiana Wesleyan, Manchester College and Taylor University. He also helped with bands at Eastern and Taylor high schools, also teaching students in his private percussion studio in his home for many years. He had taught music for 34 years.
Mr. Gilbert graduated from Eastern High School in 1972 then went on to attend Indiana University in Bloomington, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in percussion in 1978.
Karl had played in the Marion Philharmonic orchestra, Kokomo Symphony, Anderson Symphony, Muncie Symphony, Manchester Symphony and the Lafayette Symphony, teaching for 34 years. He was also a part of the Kokomo Park Band. He was also a member of the Percussive Art Society (PAS).
He is survived by his three brothers, David (Jean) Gilbert, Bruce (Linda) Gilbert and Rich (Murilyn) Gilbert, and one sister, Lois (Larry) Lund.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service celebrating Mr. Gilbert’s life will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hasler & Stout Funeral Home, 112 E. Main St., Greentown, with Pastor Dave Freelan officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Greentown. Visitation for family and friends will be from noon until time of service at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hasler & Stout Funeral Home, 112 E. Main St., Greentown.
Memorial contributions may be made to Kokomo Park Band music program.
