James Donald Carte, 82, Russiaville, passed away at 8:31 pm, Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at St. Vincent Hospital-Kokomo. He was born September 15, 1936 to the late James and Maxine (Rhodes) Carte. On November 19, 2017, he married Holly Slabach, and she survives.
James was a 1954 graduate of West Point High School. He attended Purdue University after being honorably discharged from the Army, obtaining the rank of Corporal. He served in the Army from 1954-1957 earning the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Parachutist Badge. James retired from Steel Parts Corporation after 28 years of service. He was a VFW life member and a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Kokomo.
In addition to his wife Holly, James is survived by his children, David (Debbie) Carte, Kerry (Krista) Carte, Leann (Tim) Castor, Patrick (Cindy Mayfield) Carte, and Todd, Carte; step-children, Emily Slabach, and Jason (Laura) Slabach; sister, Dorothy Kirts; grandchildren, Linsey (Ross) Bailey, Dustin (Jill) Castor, Josh Carte, Ryan (Jaymee) Castor, Shane Carte, and Logan Carte; and 5 great-grandchildren.
James was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Dick Carte, and son, Chris Carte.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am Monday, August 19, 2019 at Stout & Son Funeral Home, 200 East Main Street, Russiaville with Pastor Beverly Seese officiating. Burial will follow at Marion National Cemetery at 1 pm Tuesday, August 20, 2019 with military honors provided by the United States Army and Kokomo VFW Military Rites Team.
