Hazel Mapes Obituary

Hazel Pauline Mapes traveled home to be with her Heavenly Father on April 23, 2019, at Waterford Place, Kokomo.  She was born in Canton, Georgia, on June 1, 1924.  Hazel was the daughter of the late Maude (Howell) Akins and Ernest Akins.  She married her beloved husband, John “Jack” Mapes, on August 15, 1948, in Bedford, Indiana.  He preceded her in death.

Following her graduation from Bedford High School in 1942, Hazel enrolled in Indiana State Teachers College where she graduated in 1947.  Hazel and her husband John “Jack”, moved to Kokomo in 1955 and lived there until their death.

Hazel had attended St. Andrew Episcopal Church since 1955 and was a member of St. Anne’s Guild and the Vestry.  She came into a deeper relationship with our Lord and Savior in 1975.  Following that experience, Hazel became involved in the Faith Alive Ministries, the Cursillo Community of the Northern Indiana Diocese, and Pilgrims in Progress.  She and her husband, Jack, hosted a bi-monthly Prayer and Share group at their home for 40 years.

Hazel was also a member of Tri Kappa, Study Club and the PEO Sisterhood.  She enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, playing bridge and reading, especially anything of the spiritual nature.  Hazel and her husband, Jack, were members of the Kokomo Country Club.  They enjoyed many golf trips around the country with their friends.

Hazel is survived by her children, Cindy Mapes, Kokomo, John (Sandy) Mapes, Greentown, Jeff (Laurie) Mapes, Scappoose, Oregon; grandchildren, John Mapes, Greentown, Christopher J. Mapes, Kokomo, Christine (Nick) Schillereff, Portland, Oregon, and Nathan Mapes, Scappoose, Oregon.

Her parents, and her brother, Claude Aubrey Akins, preceded her in death.

The family would like to thank the staff at Waterford Place Health Campus for the care and the compassion they showed our mother and grandmother during the past two months of her life.  We, her family, take comfort in the belief that she will be reunited with her husband, Jack, and will dwell in the house of the Lord for all eternity.

A Requiem Mass will be at 2:00 pm Saturday, June 1, 2019, at St. Andrew Episcopal Church, 602 W. Superior Street, Kokomo, with Rev. Fr. Richard Lightsey and Rev. Fr. Ted Neidlinger officiating.  Inurnment will follow the service in the church columbarium.  Friends are invited to visit with the family from 12-2 pm Saturday at the church in Parish Hall.  Memorial contributions may be made in Hazel’s memory to Coordinated Assistance Ministries (CAM), Kokomo Urban Outreach, Kokomo Humane Society, or St. Andrew Episcopal Church.  Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory has been entrusted with arrangements.  Messages of condolence may be left online at www.shirleyandstout.com.
