In recent years he attended First Church of the Nazarene both in Kokomo and Florida.

After retirement they became Florida snowbirds for 34 years in Lady Lake, Florida. Upon his return from the US Army, he returned to a job at Haynes Stellite.  He worked there for 40 years and retired June 29, 1984.  He was a 35 year member of their Quarter Century Club. Gene was a ‘jack of all trades”, loved ice cream, M&M’s, popcorn, and watching IU basketball.  He was the #1 Outstanding Fan at all activities possible of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
