Daniel E. Wood, 81, Kokomo, passed away at 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 28, 2019, at St. Vincent Hospital in Kokomo. He was born December 29, 1937, in Vincennes, to Cecil D. and Jean (Miley) Wood. On March 15, 1958, he married Nancy A. Mitchell, and she survives.
Daniel graduated from Kokomo High School in 1956 and attended Purdue University. He began working for Kroger through high school and continued there in management until 1970. He then entered the convenience store business by opening the Lil General Store which was later changed to Handy Andy. The stores were then changed to Woody’s Food Store covering multiple locations throughout Kokomo. He enjoyed old cars, golfing, boating and traveling. Daniel was a family man and cherished spending time with his family. He served as a Howard County Commissioner for two terms and was a member of the Kokomo Country Club and attended Main Street Christian Church in Russiaville.
In addition to his wife, Nancy Wood, he is survived by his son, Michael (Shelly) Wood; daughter, Pamela (Jim) Zunick; grandchildren, Anna (Jesse) Faver, Katie Zunick, Noah Zunick, Conner Wood and Madison Wood; great-grandchildren, Eleanor Faver and Amelia Faver; and sister, Patricia Gerhart.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kimberly Nannette Wood; and brothers, Richard Wood and Terry Wood.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 18, 2019, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Rd., Kokomo, with Pastor Steve Bishop officiating. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 17, 2019, at the funeral home.
