Charles T. “Tom” Melton, 71, Kokomo, passed away at 9:25 pm Saturday, June 1, 2019, at Wellbrooke of Kokomo. He was born June 4, 1947, in Madison, Indiana, the son of Frank H. & Sylvia Viola (Stoner) Melton. On August 18, 2003, he married Anna Yvonne Oliver who preceded him in death on October 12, 2010.
Tom served with the United States Army. He retired in 1992 from the Kokomo Police Department as a Lieutenant after 21 years of service. He also served as an investigator for the prosecutor for several years after his retirement. In 1989, he was the Indiana Law Enforcement Officer of the year. He was a member of the American Legion Post 6, Izaak Walton League where he ran the Bingo League, Kokomo F.O.P., the Russiaville Masonic Lodge #82, and the Howard Masonic Lodge. Tom enjoyed golf, going on vacations, all types of sports, and was an avid Cubs fan.
Tom is survived by his sons, Thomas A. Melton (companion, Tami), Kokomo, and Brian C. Melton, Pennsylvania; step-daughter, Yvette Orr (companion, Lori Orr), Kokomo; grandsons, Thomas M. Melton, Kokomo, and Jared T. Melton, Kokomo; brother, John (Myra) Hamilton; nieces, Misty (Jessica) Oliver, Kokomo; and his companion, Rita Youngblood, Kokomo.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; and wife.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, June 7, 2019, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo, with Chuck Jansen officiating. The Kokomo Police Department will provide honors in recognition of Tom’s service. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens.
