Carol Scherschel Obituary

Carol L. Scherschel, 87, Kokomo, passed away Wednesday, December 25, 2019, at the Villages Regional Hospital in The Villages, Florida.  She was born January 31, 1932, in Indianapolis, the daughter of the late Dr. Earl and Hildegarde (Kluger) Schulz who practiced dentistry.  On October 20, 1956, in Indianapolis, she married Dr. Thomas R. Scherschel who survives.

Carol was a 1950 graduate of Southport High School where she was class Valedictorian.  She attended Earlham College and graduated from Indiana University in Medical Technology, then from Purdue University, receiving her bachelor’s degree in Vegetable Production in 1983.  Carol was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Delphian Reading Club, Symposium, the Thursday Study Group, the Book Club, and the Medical Auxiliary.

Carol’s passion was for gardening.  She planted and cared for over an acre of asparagus that was weighed on an antique grocery scale and sold on the honor system to those driving by "The Other Side".  For 16 years travelers who made the trip down Sycamore road could experience the best tasting asparagus a farm could produce. Carol also loved to plant and grow what seemed like an overabundance of pumpkins which were happily shared each fall out of the back of an authentic farm wagon.  The pumpkin patch became a yearly destination for Northwestern Elementary students. Carol truly loved flowers, transforming the woods in the back of the main house into a flower wonderland where daffodils were the stars of the show.  As winter moved to spring, the basement was always jammed with tiny seedlings under grow lights being readied for transplanting.

Along with her husband Thomas, Carol is survived by her children, John D. (Debbie) Scherschel, Bart J. (Valerie) Scherschel, Dianne E. (Mike) Lane, and Rebecca C. (Bobby) Ferguson; grandchildren, Nicholas (Summer) Scherschel, Jason Scherschel, Morgan Scherschel, Blake (Caitlin) Scherschel, Loren Scherschel, Amber Lane, William Lane, Haleigh (Robert) Holliman and Josh Ferguson; siblings, John (Brenda) Schulz, Vicki (Clyde) Donovan, and Ginny Melville, along with several nieces and nephews.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents.
