Carl Steven “Hammer” Clendenning, Sr., 71, Kokomo, passed away at 12:07 p.m. on Friday, September 13, 2019, at North Woods Commons. He was born November 3, 1947, in Frankfort, to Eldo Leon and Beverly (Baker) Clendenning.
Carl graduated from Frankfort High School in 1965 and went on to serve in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1970. After his military service, he returned to work at General Motors and retired after 40 years of service. He was a huge Cubs fan and enjoyed watching NASCAR and the races at the Kokomo Speedway. He also enjoyed playing pool and poker at the Handle Bar. He was a member of UAW Local 292, the VFW and the American Legion.
Survivors include his sons, John (Michelle) Clendenning and Carl (Ruby) Clendenning, Jr.; grandchildren, Elias, Eliana, Eliot, Sean, Chrystian and Jordyn Clendenning; siblings, Wavern Baker, Jim (Peggy) Clendenning, Jennifer (John) Krull, Cindy (Bill) Hoyer, Ed (Penny) Clendenning and Lana Graves; sister-in-law, Judy Howe; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Mitchell Clendenning.
Funeral services will be held at Noon on Wednesday, September 18, 2019, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home, 1315 W. Lincoln Rd., Kokomo. Burial will follow in Bunnell Cemetery, in Frankfort, with military honors provided by the United State Navy and the Kokomo VFW Military Rites Team. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Contributions may be made in Carl’s memory to the American Cancer Society.
