William Gene "Bill" Ellis, 78, South Bend, died at 11 a.m. Monday, July 12, 2010, at Providence House, South Bend. He was born Aug. 1, 1921, in Greentown, to Robert W. and Freda Shirlie (Powell) Ellis. On Nov. 23, 1941, in Greentown, he married Mary Elizabeth
(Williams) Ellis, and she survives.
He graduated from Union High School in 1939 and had one year of extended study in agriculture. He was a anager for Michigan Livestock Exchange as a hog buyer for 27 years and was a farmer for 18 years. He was in the United States Navy, serving from July 22, 1942, to Nov. 14, 1945, where he was a water tinder 1st Class, serving on the USS Shannon in World War II and receiving two bronze stars.
Bill was a member of the Pleasantview Church of Christ, where he served as an elder and adult Sunday school teacher. He also served as a hospice volunteer. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and feeding his birds.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Ellis; son, Ronald Ellis and wife Anita, Westport; daughter, Barbara Halstead and husband Larry, Hamilton, Ohio; son, Gene Ellis, Alexandria; son, Ed Ellis and wife Judy, South Bend; brothers, Robert Ellis and wife Rebecca, Leonard Ellis and wife Virginia, and brother-in-law, Donald Graf, all of Greentown; seven grandchildren, Ryan Ellis, Karyn Hurst, Todd Ellis, Heather McDowell, Tracie Hawes, Michael Halstead and
Jonathan Ellis; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Shirlie Ellis; a sister, Freda Graf; and a brother, Floyd Ellis.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Hasler & Stout Funeral Home, 112 E. Main St., Greentown, with Justin Shepard from Michiana Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery following the
service. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Connelly Funeral Home, 1202 N. Broadway, Cassopolis, Mich., and Saturday from 1
p.m. until time of service at 2:00 p.m. Saturday Hasler & Stout Funeral Home.
