William Edward Grimes took his first breath in Heaven at 9:40 AM on Tuesday November 27, 2013. William died from complications after a fall. William was born August 6, 1919 to Leslie and Olive Grimes. He attended the Indiana School for the Deaf lettering in football, baseball, and basketball. William was instrumental in leading his deaf team to a championship in 1940. He was married June 28, 1948 to Freda June O'Malley and she preceded him in death on February 2, 2012. He had been on a semi-pro traveling basketball team traveling all over the U.S. In September 2012 William was inducted to the Hall of Fame in Indianapolis for his basketball skills. After leaving the team he went to work in a shoe repair shop for 18 months, then got on at the Globe, and finally went on to work at Kolux until he retired in 1984. His biggest passion was spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He had been a lifetime member of the Kokomo Deaf Club. He loved to bowl and was on a bowling team for years at Cedar Crest “The Stars League".
He is survived by his brother Robert Grimes of Arkansas.
Together William and Freda had four children; Patricia Lindsay, twins Deborah (Bob) Hill, Daniel Grimes, and James Grimes. He was blessed with 10 grandchildren; Heather Vincent, Bridget (Scott) Swing, Rob (Azeneth) Dockemeyer, Jason (Sarah) Hill, Jared Alexander, Hillary (Jarred) Summers, Chris (Kayla) Hill, Angelica (Brad) Hodges, Mariah Parson-Grimes, and Eli Grimes. He was also beautifully blessed with 17 great-grandchildren; Blake, Kayley, Kaitlyn, A.J., Isabella, Ashley, Gabriella, Landon, Danielle, Alton, Payton, Canton, Alissa, Maura, Dean, Wyatt, and Emrick.
He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife Freda, son Daniel, son James Grimes, son-in-law Bobbie Joe Lindsay, grandson-in-law Brian Vincent, his parents Leslie and Olive, his sister Rosalind, and brother Richard Grimes.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 2, 2013 at Shirley & Stout Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1315 West Lincoln Road, with Pastor Bill Carmichael & Pastor Brian Hughes officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 11 a.m. until service time at the funeral home on Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Indiana School for the Deaf.
